Glass treatments

What do we print and fit on glass?

Five families of window work, every one printed, cut and installed by the same in-house team. Pick by privacy, light and campaign length: frost for privacy that keeps the daylight, printed vinyl for the campaign, one-way vision where the view out matters, manifestation where the regulation applies.

Window graphics London: holographic effect window film on a retail display window
  • The campaign workhorse. Full-colour window vinyl printing at Camden, ICC-managed and Pantone-matched against a signed-off proof, laminated where the install is street-facing. First-surface for speed, second-surface (printed on the inside face, viewed through the glass) for retail campaigns that have to hold colour for the run. For paper posters displayed behind the glass rather than printed onto it, we run those too.

  • Standard frost, gradient frost, coloured frost and etched-effect film for the sandblasted look, cut to any geometry on the plotter. A frosted window sticker with logo cut clean against the frost is the highest-impact identity move a clinic entrance or office floor can make for the money. Removable grades peel with no residue.

  • One way vision window film is perforated vinyl: the graphic prints on the solid sections, light passes through the holes. The street sees a full-colour image, the team inside still sees the pavement. The spec for full-coverage retail fronts that cannot black the shop out.

  • Two-band contrast markings at 850 to 1000mm and 1400 to 1600mm above finished floor level, satisfying the Equality Act 2010, Approved Document M and BS 8300. Plain frosted dots, or your brand pattern doing the same legal job. Detail in the compliance section below.

  • Occupier names, opening hours, contact strips and regulatory notices, plotter-cut from coloured or printed film in removable or permanent adhesive to suit the lease. Where the brief is standalone signage lettering rather than a window job, the same plotter runs our full range of cut vinyl lettering and decals.

Compliance · Equality Act 2010 + Approved Document M

What are window manifestations, and does your glass need them?

Window manifestations are the contrast markings the law requires on large areas of clear glass in commercial buildings, so the glazing reads as a barrier. The Equality Act 2010 and Approved Document M set the requirement; BS 8300 details the accessibility spec. Two horizontal bands: 850 to 1000mm and 1400 to 1600mm above finished floor level, visible against the background in all lighting. Full-height partitions, frameless shopfronts, meeting-room walls and public entrances all fall inside it.

Where the regulation bites

Office fit-outs with full-height glass partitions, frameless shopfronts, schools, clinics and public buildings. This is where most window graphics printing suppliers get caught short: a frosted dot pattern fitted at eyeballed height off the skirting fails its first access audit. The band heights are measured from finished floor level, and the difference between FFL and screed is exactly the difference between a passed audit and a re-fit.

Plain dots, or your brand

The manifestation does not have to look like an apology. Logos at the regulation height, brand pattern at the regulation contrast, decorative banding that satisfies BS 8300 and reinforces the identity in the same pass. Most of the glass manifestations for windows london fit-out teams brief us for ship as branded patterns, not plain dots.

Surveyed, fitted, closed

A fitter measures every pane and confirms the band positions where compliance applies, or we work from your dimensions on file. Print and plotter-cut at Camden, install on site, out-of-hours for occupied buildings. Artwork stays on record, so the next floor or the next tenant runs from file without a re-survey.

Privacy · Frosted and etched-effect film

Frosted window film, with the logo cut clean

Frosted window film does the work of acid-etched glass at a fraction of the cost, applied as a removable self-adhesive film. It blocks the view but passes the light. That is the spec a clinic wants for its consulting rooms, or a corporate floor for the meeting rooms the corridor should not see into. Full sheets for blanket privacy, plotter-cut patterns for banding, logos cut clear against the frost.

S

Standard frost

Full-sheet privacy for partitions, entrances and street-facing glass. Bright room, softened view.

G

Gradient frost

Solid at seated height, fading to clear above. Sightline open, screens private, daylight kept.

L

Cut-logo frost

A frosted window sticker with logo cut clean against the frost, or the effect reversed into the brand mark on a clear pane.

C

Coloured + pattern

Coloured frost, printed frost and repeating pattern film for retail banding and decorative screens.

E

Etched-effect

Brushed and sandblasted-look films where the brief wants the acid-etched read without touching the glazing.

R

Removable-grade

Peels clean with no residue and no damage. The dilapidations file stays clean at end of tenancy.

Frosted vinyl privacy band across a London boutique shopfront window

Acid etching is a permanent chemical treatment of the glass itself: days of lead time, and the pane is committed forever. The film gives the same visual effect as a removable self-adhesive vinyl window film, installed in hours, removable without damaging the glazing, and replaceable when the brand changes. For office, retail and clinic privacy work the film is the spec. We hold the cut files on record, so the next floor or the next tenant reorders without a re-survey.

No. It diffuses light rather than blocking it, so the room behind a fully frosted pane stays bright while the direct beam softens. Offices favour frost on south-facing partitions for exactly that reason: less screen glare, no loss of ambient light. Where partial privacy is enough, gradient frost keeps the top of the pane clear and the daylight with it. Vinyl window stickers in removable frost do the same job on a single door pane.

Walk in to Mayfair (8 Avery Row) or Camden (23-27 King’s Terrace) and handle the film grades on the counter before you brief the job.

Retail · The pane you pay rent on

Retail window displays and shop window graphics

A shopfront on Bond Street, Carnaby or Oxford Street is out-of-home media at reading distance. Retail window display printing turns a dead pane into the highest-dwell-time surface a brand owns. That can be a short-run window poster behind the pane, or a full vinyl takeover across it.

The detail is what shows: a bubble at eye level or a band 30mm off line tells every passer-by the brand cuts corners. We print and install window displays the way the outdoor trade specs a billboard, and fit every one with our own London crew.

Years
Frost + cut lettering

Unprinted frost and cut film are the permanent identity layer that holds for years under the campaigns.

Second-surface print: the retail default Campaign strip-down: part of the service Artwork: held on record for reorder Quoted per pane, spec and install
Shop window graphics: full-coverage printed vinyl on a luxury London shopfront

Second-surface means the graphic is printed reversed and applied to the inside face of the glass, viewed through it. The glass itself becomes the laminate: no pollution on the print face, no scuffing from the street, and the colour holds for the life of the campaign. First-surface (outside face) is faster to fit and right for short promos and one-way vision. We advise per pane at survey, and every window vinyl job is proofed and laminated under one roof before it leaves for the install.

Retailers running campaign-by-campaign windows brief us once. We produce the printed window graphics for shops, install cleanly, return at campaign end to strip and fit the next, all off the same set of measurements. Restaurants on a seasonal menu run the same way, and W1 pop-ups swap brands month to month off one survey. The pane measurements and artwork live on file, so the reorder is a phone call, not a project. For the matching graphics on the floor inside the glass, see our floor graphics.

A window poster is printed on paper or board and sits behind the pane: quick, low-cost, and right for a press day, a menu change or a two-week promotion, swapped by hand. Fitted window graphics are printed on vinyl or film and applied to the pane itself, for campaigns that run for months and need to look built into the shopfront. We print both at Camden and, for the fitted work, install with our own crew, so a retailer can move from a window poster test to a full window display rollout without changing supplier. For paper posters away from the window, see our poster printing.

Who briefs us

Who orders window graphics in London?

Three briefs cover most of the printed window graphics that leave Camden: the office fit-out, the retail campaign, and the gallery or restaurant front. Scale runs from a single glass-door logo to multi-site rollouts, and the window graphics design can start from your brand assets or from a sketch on the counter.

Office window graphics london briefs usually land as three jobs in one survey: manifestation banding on the corridor glazing, frosted privacy on the meeting rooms, identity work on the reception screens. We quote the floor, install over an evening or weekend around occupied tenancy, and hand back a floor of glazing that does compliance, privacy and brand in one pass. Files for serviced offices and co-working floors stay on record, so the next fit-out phase reorders without a re-survey. Installs run through our own installation team.

Mayfair, Carnaby and Soho retailers run their windows campaign by campaign, and the window graphics printing runs to the launch date, not the other way round. Seasonal menus, sale weekends, product launches, pop-ups swapping brands month to month. Static cling for the short promo, removable window vinyls for the season, one-way vision where the whole pane works as an image. For backlit panels behind the glass, see our lightbox printing.

Single panels for a gallery street front, full wraps for a touring exhibition, function-room glazing dressed without losing the view. Removable adhesives keep the venue intact for the next show. And a window brief rarely lands alone: standalone signage lettering runs as vinyl graphics and decals, surfaces bigger than a shopfront go to large-format printing, and the same crew fits all of it. One point of contact, one building.

How it works

How we produce your window graphics

1

Survey or send sizes

A fitter measures every pane and confirms manifestation bands where compliance applies. Or email pane dimensions and a photo of the glass to post@cityimages.co.uk.

2

Artwork and proof

In-house design works from your brand assets, returns a mockup on photos of the actual glazing. Pantone matched against a signed-off proof before anything prints.

3

Print and cut at Camden

Wide-format print, plotter cut, lamination where the install is street-facing. The artwork stays on record for the next reorder.

4

Installed by our own fitters

Wet application for large panels, dry for smaller, out-of-hours for occupied buildings. Campaign-end strip-down is part of the service, glass left as found.

Sustainable glass print, plainly stated: 90% of our paper output ships on FSC-approved stock, and City Images is committed to carbon-neutral operations by 2029. Every offcut, release liner and end-of-campaign strip-down recycles through FirstMile, and our digital printing leaves virtually no setup waste: no plates, no chemicals, no make-ready sheets. Removable-grade adhesives keep the glass clean at end of life, so the next tenant inherits a clean pane.

Window manifestations are contrast markings the Equality Act 2010 and Approved Document M require on large areas of clear glass in commercial buildings, with BS 8300 detailing the accessibility spec. Two horizontal bands: 850 to 1000mm above finished floor level, and 1400 to 1600mm. Any London office, shop, school, clinic or public building with clear-glass partitions or a frameless shopfront needs them. Plain frosted dots or branded patterns both satisfy the regulation.

Often, yes. Printed vinyl and plotter-cut film run same-day from clean artwork when the schedule allows, and installation is booked around site access. Phone either studio with the deadline and you get a straight yes or no, no fixed cutoffs. For the wider urgent service, see our same-day printing in London hub.

Standard frosted film blocks the view both ways while passing diffused daylight, the spec for clinics, meeting rooms and any privacy-led application. For see-out-not-in privacy we use one-way vision perforated film or mirrored film, advised at survey based on aspect and light conditions.

Removable-grade adhesive lifts cleanly with no residue and no damage to the glazing, the grade we default to on leased premises and seasonal campaigns. Permanent-grade is available where the install is long-term. Strip-down is handled as part of the service at campaign end.

One-way vision film, also called contravision, is perforated vinyl. The graphic prints on the solid sections and light passes through the holes, so the street reads a full-colour image while you look out through the perforations and see the pavement clearly. Daylight overwhelming the interior light is what makes it work, so the effect is strongest during shopping hours.

We install what we produce. Our own fitters cover London as standard and EU project work, with UK-wide installs arranged on the same job ticket. The account manager who priced the job follows it through print, finishing and installation, so a spec question on the glass gets answered by someone who has seen the file.

Laminated printed vinyl on a central London street face typically runs 12 to 18 months before colour drifts, longer on sheltered aspect, shorter on south-facing sun. Unprinted frosted film holds for years. One-way vision film runs 12 to 18 months. Artwork stays on record so a reprint ships without a second design round.

Campaign-by-campaign cycles are how most Bond Street, Carnaby, Mayfair and Soho retailers run their windows. We produce, install, strip at campaign end and fit the next, all off the same set of measurements. Static-cling film with no adhesive covers short promos; removable self-adhesive vinyl covers weeks-to-months campaigns.

ICC colour management runs on every wide-format job at Camden, with Pantone and RAL matched against a signed-off proof. Cut vinyl is stocked or sourced in specified solid colours. Where colour is critical we proof on the actual film before full production.

No. The film bonds to the glass face only, not the frame or the seal. Wet application uses a soap-and-water solution that evaporates as the film cures, with nothing aggressive near silicone or gaskets. Removable-grade adhesive lifts cleanly at end of life and the glass is left as found.

Yes: single panels for a gallery street front, full wraps for a touring exhibition, multi-site retail and cultural rollouts on one programme. Removable adhesives keep the venue intact for the next show. We have produced window work for luxury retail, restaurant launches and gallery exhibitions across Mayfair, Soho and the West End.

Window graphics London coverage is genuinely London-wide, from two studios: walk in to Mayfair W1 to handle samples, brief into Camden NW1 for production. Fitters cover Westminster, the City of London, Camden, Islington, Kensington and Chelsea, and the wider central London boroughs as standard. For larger installs a fitter surveys the glass before we quote: every pane measured, every reveal photographed, manifestation bands confirmed where compliance applies. Smaller jobs work from your dimensions on file.
